Recall: Monster, 5-Hour Energy and 30+ other energy drinks and mixes

Via CFIA release:

In a sweeping move to ensure public safety, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a national recall on various brands of caffeinated energy drinks and mixes. The cause for concern stems from non-compliances related to caffeine content and labelling requirements.

According to the CFIA, several of these products have been found to exceed the permissible caffeine levels. In Canada, the legal limit for caffeine in a single-serving is capped at 180mg. Furthermore, products with unilingual labels, or those without English or French, indicate they haven’t been tailored for the Canadian market and thus may not meet local standards.

Consumers are strongly advised against consuming, serving, using, selling, or distributing the recalled products. The potential adverse health effects of excessive caffeine consumption can be severe, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant and breastfeeding individuals, and those sensitive to caffeine. Side effects may include insomnia, irritability, headaches, and nervousness. The CFIA also warns that exercising while consuming high levels of caffeine can lead to further health complications.

The recalls are a result of an ongoing investigation by the CFIA, which revealed that the majority of the recalled products were neither manufactured nor intended for sale in Canada. Instead, they have been imported by third parties and sold across the country. Some consumers might have also purchased these products online.

While there are several similar products available in Canada that meet all the necessary requirements, these specific recalls were not associated with any reported reactions. The CFIA and Health Canada are now working hand in hand to address these non-compliance issues. They aim to ensure that the industry removes the recalled products from the market and to educate consumers about the potential health risks of high caffeine levels.

To further assist consumers in making informed choices, the CFIA recommends checking product labels for cautionary statements, which are mandatory in Canada. These statements are designed to protect vulnerable populations and provide information on safe consumption limits.

Companies such as 5002589 Ontario Inc., Echo Sales Canada, Nutsco Incorporation, and many others are listed in connection with these recalls. The CFIA’s alert ID numbers associated with this recall range from 15624 to 15734.

The CFIA’s investigation into caffeinated energy drinks that do not meet Canadian standards is still ongoing. They are urging the public to stay vigilant and informed. Consumers can sign up for recall notifications via email or follow the CFIA on social media for real-time updates.
