Recognizing dispatchers on National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

On National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week April 8-14, Nova Scotia RCMP is recognizing the vital role of dispatchers.

In 2017, the Nova Scotia RCMP Operational Communications Centre (OCC) answered 247,879 calls. Of those, 93,557 were 911 emergencies.

“Dispatchers are on the other end of the line as someone could be experiencing the worst moments of their life,” says Insp. Bill Long, Officer in Charge of the Nova Scotia RCMP OCC. “They are a calm voice during a crisis, a lifeline for those in need and a fundamental part of police operations.”

When dispatchers receive a call, they enter information in computer systems and evaluate what services are required. Information is then sent to police officers and they continue to monitor the officers on the road.

Dispatchers support the front line
24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. They make quick, high-stakes decisions that help protect the public and first responders and their essential work deserves celebrating.

Throughout the week, Nova Scotia RCMP will share information about the unique role of dispatchers through social media. Follow along on Twitter at @RCMPNS and the hashtag #NPSTW and on Facebook at Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nova Scotia.
