Regan: “Restore funding to Environmental Networks”

Geoff Regan, MP for Halifax West, is calling on the federal government to reverse its decision to cut funding to the Canadian Environmental Network (RECN).

Without any explanation, the federal government informed the RECN that it would no longer be providing funding to the organization and the provincial and territorial Environmental Networks.

“This is a short-sighted decision that will hurt Canada’s ability to conduct environmental research and protection projects,” said Regan.

The RCEN consists of over 640 organizations from across Canada. The national office was forced to lay off its staff and is fighting to keep the doors open at the national office and 11 regional offices. The RECN helps to coordinate the efforts of environmental groups, share their expertise with policy makers and support their conservation and education projects.

“Canadians are concerned about environmental sustainability and this decision will be a major setback for national efforts to create a clean and healthy environment,” said the Liberal MP.

“I urge the Conservative government to come to its senses and support this valuable organization so that it can continue to promote environmental sustainability.”
