Regan seeks funding to restock Sackville River

Halifax West MP Geoff Regan tabled a petition in the House of Commons on Tuesday seeking federal funding to restock the Sackville River with salmon.

Mr. Regan said the petition calls on the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to immediately fund a two-year restocking program for the Sackville River.

“There is a dedicated group of people in the Sackville Rivers Association who have been volunteering their time to protecting the salmon habitat in our community,” said Regan. “The federal government should be supporting their efforts.”

He said the Department of Fisheries and Oceans should also assist the Sackville River Association in remediation of the river habitat.

The request for funding follows an act of vandalism that saw several hundred litres of furnace oil spilled into the Little Sackville River in 2009.
