Regional Council approves new two-year collective agreement with CUPE Local 108

Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Regional Council today reviewed and ratified a new two-year collective agreement with Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 108, which was also approved by the union membership at a vote held late last week.

“I am pleased that we were able to come to a fair and equitable contract that represents hard work by both bargaining teams,” said Mayor Mike Savage. “We have met Council’s direction to achieve an agreement that respects the value and work undertaken by these employees while recognizing the need to be financially responsible.”

The new two-year agreement is effective for the period of Nov. 1, 2015 through to Oct. 31, 2017, and includes an annual 1.5 per cent wage increase for each year of the agreement.

A Memorandum of Understanding respecting diversity and inclusion was also reached during the bargaining process, which reflects that both parties are committed to a workplace that is free of discrimination, values diversity and is representative of the people of Halifax Regional Municipality.

CUPE Local 108 includes over 300 municipal outside workers in various positions including labourers, facility maintainers and operators, gardeners, utility workers, tradespersons, painters, and traffic sign and marking technicians.
