Reminder of Lyme disease meeting this evening

The Bedford Residents Association, in conjunction with our MLA, Kelly Regan, is pleased to advise that Dr. Ernie Murakami of the Dr. E. Murakami Centre for Lyme will be in Bedford to discuss Lyme disease this evening, September 19, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Basinview Drive Community School.

All those interested in learning more about Lyme disease are welcome to attend. As you may know, Bedford is an endemic area for Lyme so all should know the correct way of preventing Lyme disease, the proper removal of a tick and how to obtain a diagnosis and treatment.

Donna Lugar, a resident of Bedford, states that it was recently brought to her attention that “many people think that ticks are still only located in a specific area of Bedford (ie. Admiral Cove Park). For your information, this is no longer the case. People throughout Bedford (and Nova Scotia) have now been diagnosed with Lyme disease. It is up to you to ensure you know the proper way to avoid ticks, how to remove them and the symptoms (which mimic many other illnesses and diseases). Please try to attend either this valuable information session or the one on the 18th in Mahone Bay.”

Councillor Tim Outhit agrees, and adds that “unfortunately, in the past neither the province or HRM did anything to try to contain a problem that we have known about for 10 years. The deer baiting stations are in place, but will take up to 3 years to have affect. In the meantime, yes ticks have spread!”
