Replica gun mistaken as real firearm, results in significant police response

A report of a man with a gun resulted in a significant police response yesterday. The investigation revealed that a replica gun had been mistaken as a real firearm.

Just after 6 p.m., Cumberland District RCMP responded to the 911 call of a man with a gun near the intersection of Main St. and Grey St. in Springhill. Numerous police units were called in to assist, including RCMP Police Dog Services.

A man matching the description was located by police. No weapon was found on him but police later confirmed that the weapon seen was a plastic replica gun.

Nova Scotia RCMP wishes to advise the public that replica and toy guns can be mistaken as real firearms and may be reported to police as such. Any call involving firearms will involve a considerable response and may divert resources from other matters. Police officers will treat them as real until they can prove that they are not.

The investigation is ongoing.
