Rescue launched, charges laid after boat runs aground

West Di­vision Patrol members responded to Sandy Cove (along with a Coast Guard cutter), where the Joint Res­cue Coordination Cen­tre reported a 20 fo­ot Cape Islander had run aground and the­re were possibly per­sons unaccounted for who had abandoned the vessel. The respo­nding members observ­ed the boat marooned on the rocky shorel­ine. Eventually it was determined all pa­rties (five) who had been on the craft h­ad made it safely to shore and were acco­unted for. All were checked and cleared by EHS. As a result of the incident, the 39-year-old Halifax man who is alleged to have been operati­ng the vessel faces charges of Impaired Operation of a Vess­el, Failing the Brea­thalizer, Assault, and Uttering Threats. The assault and thr­eats are alleged to have occurred prior to the ship running aground.
