Residents Encouraged to “Get Caught Donating” Used Goods

Wednesday, May 21, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Representatives from the Halifax Regional Municipality will be at the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Strawberry Hill this Thursday, May 22, recognizing residents who come in to donate their used clothing and other household textiles.

Every year Nova Scotians donate approximately 7,000 tonnes of these materials to organizations like the Salvation Army Thrift Store. But another 30,000 tonnes still end up in landfills across the province.

This is the first year the municipality is partnering with the Salvation Army Thrift Store to put on the “Get Caught Donating” event. The goal is to help raise awareness about recycling used clothing and household textiles, while also helping local individuals and families in need.

Staff with Solid Waste Resources will be at the Salvation Army Thrift Store from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. educating the public on recycling and community diversion programs and initiatives, and also handing out coupons to those who have stopped by to make a donation.

Residents are encouraged to go through their wardrobes to see if they have anything they can give as part of this initiative on Thursday, or any time that is convenient to them.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store is a member of AFTeR, a group of six organizations that joined together in 2013 with the mandate of raising awareness about the importance of textiles recycling. These groups collect used clothing to fund social causes such as helping children at risk, combatting disease and supporting marginalized citizens and those facing crisis.
