Residents encouraged to get in gear for Bike Week 2016

Wednesday, June 1, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Cycling novices and enthusiasts of all ages look forward each year to Bike Week, a community-led initiative which aims to celebrate, educate and promote the myriad benefits of cycling to work, school or for recreation. Bike Week is being celebrated this year from June 3 to 12 in the Halifax Regional Municipality, and features over 25 bicycling events being held across the region. Bike Week aims to encourage residents to try riding a bicycle, celebrate cycling and its many health benefits, and to promote everyone sharing the road safely.This year’s Bike Week theme, ‘Connecting Communities’, promotes the many ways that cycling brings our communities together. Residents can get active, have fun and meet new people, while learning the rules of the road. There will be opportunities for residents to meet, and ride with one another at a number of activities being held across the region in celebration of Bike Week. A range of events are being held that will appeal to cyclists of all skill levels, including workshops on safety and bicycle repair, group rides and bike rodeos, trail rides, and more. Signature events of Bike Week 2016 include: MEC Bikefest, Southwest Sunday Cycle, The Halifax Cycling Coalition Bike Expo, SWITCH: Dartmouth and MEC Bike to School Day. Halifax Transit is pleased to support Bike Week once again by offering free ferry rides for all cyclists travelling with a bike from June 3 to 12 inclusive.
