Residents Encouraged to Help Prepare for Forecasted Rain

Friday, Jan. 8, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – With rain in the forecast for early next week, the Halifax Regional Municipality is working to ensure catch basins around the region are clear of snow and ice, and is encouraging residents to report any problem areas to 311.

Catch basins are the municipality’s responsibility. These drains, located along the edge of the roadway, are typically opened up as the street is cleared, but occasionally more focused efforts are required to remove the snow and ice.

There are more than 29,000 catch basins across the region. Most streets and sidewalks have been cleared and widened since Halifax’s first two storms over the holidays; however, there may still be some areas where the catch basins are obstructed.

Residents and business owners can locate catch basins in their area using this interactive map. Once located, if residents are able to safely clear the snow and ice away, they are encouraged to do so, as this will help to reduce instances of flooding on public and private property. Citizens can also call these issues in to 311 or email contact@halifax.ca and their concerns will be dispatched to Road Operations.

Forecasts are calling for significant rainfall on Monday with a high of 9 degrees. The temperature is expected to drop below freezing overnight into Tuesday. Drainage will be important in helping to prevent ice buildup on the streets and sidewalks, especially since crews won’t be able to apply brine or salt ahead of time due to the heavy rain expected.

The municipality thanks residents for their cooperation to help keep our streets and sidewalks safe for all users. For more information on municipal Winter Operations and what you can do to plan ahead, visit www.halifax.ca/snow.
