Residents Encouraged to Prepare for Mix of Snow and Rain on Friday

Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax region is expecting a mix of snow and rain starting midday Friday, which could make for a challenging evening commute tomorrow. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on weather forecasts over the next 36 hours and adjust their travel accordingly.

There is currently a winter storm watch in effect for many areas of Nova Scotia, including Halifax. Right now forecasts are calling for between 15 and 20 centimetres of snow mixed with rain in some areas. Any change in the track of this weather system will have an impact on the type and amount of precipitation this area may receive.

Crews started last night applying brine on the streets and will continue with this work today and this evening. Warmer temperatures over the last couple of days have helped to bare-up pavement on most roadways and sidewalks.

Crews also removed a significant amount of snow over the past two weeks on streets in downtown Halifax and Dartmouth, as well as cul-de-sacs in residential areas where snow storage is limited. This will help maintain parking in the business districts and ensure emergency vehicles, buses and other traffic can safely access the streets throughout the winter.

Transit

Halifax Transit staff will be assessing the weather and road conditions throughout the day and evening tomorrow. Updates on individual bus routes will be available by following @hfxtransit on Twitter, which is also streamed online at http://www.halifax.ca/transit.

Recreation

Municipal recreation programs and services may be affected later in the day. Residents are asked to contact their respective facility tomorrow for further updates on delays, closures and cancellations.

Solid Waste

Garbage, recyclables and organics collection will go ahead as scheduled on Friday. Residents who regularly have collection that day are asked to move their waste out of the path of snow-clearing equipment, if possible.
