Release:

The Royal Canadian Navy regrets to announce the death of one of its sailors following an incident during small boat operations in the Bedford Basin, Halifax, on Friday, January 24, 2025.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. local time when two sailors were operating a rigid-hull inflatable boat that overturned and capsized. A rescue operation was swiftly coordinated by the Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre (JRCC) Halifax, which dispatched Canadian Coast Guard vessels to the scene. The sailors were recovered from the water and brought to the Mill Cove jetty, where they were met by paramedics and subsequently transferred to the QEII Hospital.

Despite efforts to resuscitate, one of the sailors tragically succumbed to their injuries. Out of respect for the next of kin, the sailor’s name is not being released at this time.

The second sailor involved in the incident was treated and later released from the hospital.

The Military Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which is standard procedure in such cases. No further information is available at this time.
