Running; The Hate/Hate, Love/Hate relationship

I’m not a runner…

Well that’s not entirely true.  I was a sprinter in high school, doing the 200m, 400m and 4 x 400m in track, but I’m not nor have I ever been a long distance runner.  I’ve tried many times over the years to become a long distance runner, but my attention span is that of a chipmunk and shiny things distract me very easily while running.

When I was in my “toning up” stage of my weight loss, I would run every morning but I was never able to run more than 3km because I’d gas myself out, not knowing how to pace myself.  The same was the case when I started training for the Blue Nose Marathon last summer.  I was able to run 3km in under 13 minutes, but I’d be so tired from running fast that I’d be done and not able to continue.  Between not knowing how to pace myself and my injuries, I was prevented from hitting my goal of running the half marathon last May.

I’ve tried many, many times to become a long distance runner and have failed every time and it was something that bothered me as I’m not one who likes to fail or give up on anything.  I’ve had a serious love/hate (but mostly hate/hate) relationship with running over the past four years.

After realizing that I needed to train properly and learn how to run long distance the right way, I was privileged enough to be have been asked to join Team Myles and train for the Blue Nose Marathon this year.  I’ve had three personal bests already hitting 5km for the first time and since then hitting 6km and 7.5km.  I’ve been sidelined the past month with injuries, but I can’t wait to get back out there and pound the pavement, which is something I’d never thought I’d say.

Below are some of the posts I’ve written about my failures and successes with running.  Some of the posts are me cursing a blue streak about how much I hate running and others are me gloating and bragging about how great I felt and my milestones I’ve accomplished.

Are you a “runner”? Do you want to become a “runner”? Have injuries held you back? What are your experiences with running?
