In-river Restoration Project
The Sackville Rivers Association (SRA) is seeking volunteers to assist with an in-river restoration project in Tomahawk Run, a main tributary to the Sackville River. The project entails installing 20-25 digger log and rock sill structures which the SRA has used in the past to restore fish habitat in other tributaries.
The river is located near the White Hills Run subdivision adjacent to Pockwock Road and Hammonds Plains Road. The field work will be labor intensive and includes walking through the woods to the sites and using hand tools (shovels and pick axes) and moving in-stream material to install the structures. The SRA will provide chest waders/rubber boots and gloves as well as transportation to and from the SRA office (45 Connolly Rd, Lower Sackville).
Culvert and River Crossing Surveying Project
The Sackville Rivers Association (SRA) is seeking volunteers to assist with a culvert and river crossing assessment project throughout the Sackville River Watershed. The project includes field surveying over 60 crossings to assess fish passage issues at each site and habitat connectivity throughout the watershed.
The sites are at various locations in the watershed from Lower to Upper Sackville, Hammonds Plains, and Mount Uniacke. The field work includes surveying (lengths, widths, slopes, elevations) and identifying different types of culvert and bridge designs as well as some river surveying. The SRA will provide chest waders/rubber boots as well as transportation to and from the SRA office (45 Connolly Rd, Lower Sackville).
Volunteers should bring food and water each day as some locations may be somewhat remote as well as sunscreen, bug spray, and a change of clothes. Most field days are from 9:00am-4:00pm but shorter days are possible.
