Safety tips for National Drowning Prevention Week

With summer here, many Nova Scotians are spending more time in the water and spending time on their boats. National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) runs from July 18-24 and the RCMP is reminding the public about the importance of water safety.

Each year, RCMP in Nova Scotia respond to drownings that also occur while boating. By wearing a PFD, you decrease the odds of a drowning incident should you become submerged in the water. By the time the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team receives a call about someone drowning, it can often be too late. The team often works hours and days to search for loved ones who have been lost to drowning.

Here are a few safety tips to remember when boating this season:

·         Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) when on boats or watercraft

·         Stick to water related activities within your capability or skill level

·         Avoid areas of rough or fast moving water, strong tidal currents and surges

·         Don’t consume alcohol or drugs while boating or participating in water activities

As Nova Scotians, we have a shared responsibility on the water to keep everyone safe. The RCMP uses patrol boats in various parts of Nova Scotia to conduct routine patrols. Please say hi to our members if you encounter them on the water this summer.
