Safety tips for the Canada Day weekend

Canada Day marks the first long weekend of the summer. RCMP know thousands of Nova Scotians will be celebrating by heading out to visit family and friends.

With the increased traffic volume, RCMP want to advise motorists traveling Nova Scotia’s highways and roadways this weekend that they can expect to see an increase in education and enforcement checkpoints in communities across the province.

“Impaired driving is still one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on Nova Scotia highways,” says RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae of Halifax District RCMP. “We need the help of all motorists to keep our roads safe. And remember, if you think you see an impaired driver, please call 911.”

The following road safety reminders will help ensure you arrive at your vacation destination safely:

– Plan your trip – check with 511 for road conditions or construction activity. Allow plenty of time to get to your destination.

– Wear you seat belt. Seat belt usage is not just for passenger safety; it also helps the driver to maintain control of the vehicle.
– Don’t get distracted- Driving is a skill and takes concentration and focus no matter what your age. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel.
– Share the road- watch for cyclist and pedestrian traffic. The kids are out of school and vacation season has started for many adults.
– Slow down and keep enough distance from the vehicle in front of you. Tailgating is dangerous and can result in a serious crash.
– Be responsible with your alcohol, both with consuming and transporting.
