Sail Grand Prix (SailGP) is the Indy 500 of sailing, and a world event. Unlike traditional sailboats, SailGP features high-speed, hydrofoiling catamarans known as F50s that travel at speeds of nearly 100 km/h.

These boats are designed with cutting-edge technology that allows them to lift out of the water and “fly” on hydrofoils.

The races will take over Halifax Harbour on June 1st and 2nd between George’s Island and The MacDonald Bridge.

Teams from around the world are competing, and the races will be broadcast globally. It’s the first time the competition has come to Canada.

Join us to see a unique look behind the scenes at the event from a fan’s perspective. We’ll also take you behind the scenes at the SailGP basecamp in Downtown Dartmouth, where all competing teams have established their headquarters. Races start on Saturday June 1st at 4pm.

The Boats and the Crews

The F50 catamarans used in SailGP are marvels of modern engineering. These boats can “fly” above the water on hydrofoils, drastically reducing drag and allowing for incredible speeds. Each boat is crewed by a team of highly trained athletes, including a helmsman, wing trimmer, and grinders who power the boat. It’s a true team effort, much like a pit crew in auto racing.
