School area walkabout at Basinview School

Concerned parents, school staff, and municipal representatives will gather on February 10th, 2010 to participate in a school area walkabout in promotion of active and safe routes to school for Basinview students.

The walkabout is part of the national School Travel Planning (STP) program, an established, community-based model that promotes the use of active transportation for the trip to and from school.

Active transportation is any kind of human-powered transportation, such as walking, bicycling and in-line skating, as well as additional methods appropriate to our Canadian climate, such as skating, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

School Travel Planning brings together community stakeholders to identify barriers to active transportation at schools and to develop a written action plan for addressing those barriers. Participants in the walkabout will see these barriers for Basinview students first hand.

The Canadian School Travel Planning project – coordinated in Nova Scotia by Active & Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) of the Ecology Action Centre – is an initiative of Green Communities Canada, and is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, George Weston Limited/Loblaw Companies Limited, and the Green Communities Foundation.

WHEN: Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 at 8:00 a.m.

WHERE: Basinview Drive Community School library (meet at the library and commence the neighbourhood walkabout at approximately 8:15 a.m.)

The school is located at 273 Basinview Drive.
