Sediment release into Lake Thomas

Friday, July 22, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents along Lake Thomas and Fletchers Lake in Fall River of an uncontaminated sediment release into Lake Thomas.

Silt from the new McQuarrie Bridge construction zone accidentally released from a filtration tank into the nearby waterway Friday afternoon. Corrective measures have been taken to control the release.

There is no human health risk as a direct result of this sediment release.

Construction work in the waterway has been suspended by provincial Environment Department officials, pending the outcome of an updated sediment control mitigation plan from the contractor.

Some residents and businesses draw water from these lakes and therefore should take appropriate measures to ensure their private water filtration systems continue to work effectively.

All citizens are reminded it is never safe to drink untreated water from any body of water.

A further announcement will be made when construction work in the waterway resumes.
