As part of our continued focus on pedestrian safety, Halifax Regional Police and Halifax District RCMP have committed to releasing a monthly vehicle/pedestrian collision report to provide police and citizens with more contextual information on this issue.
During the month of September, there were 18 vehicle/pedestrian collisions in Halifax. Month over month, this represents an increase (+6 incidents) from the 12 incidents reported in August 2016. Year over year, there was a decrease (-4 incidents) from the 22 incidents reported in September 2015. There is also a slight increase in the number of incidents (131 incidents) when comparing the period January 1-September 30, 2016 to the same period in 2015 (130 incidents).
For the period January 1-September 30, 2016, 57 per cent (75 incidents) of vehicle/pedestrian collisions occurred in crosswalks. Of the 136 pedestrians involved:
· 44 reported no injury
· 63 experienced minor injuries
· 17 experienced moderate injuries
· 3 experienced severe injuries
· 9 did not report their injuries to police
· 0 pedestrian fatalities
