Statement from MP Darren Fisher:
Yesterday’s announcement is great news for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour! Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that our Government, through Build Canada Homes, has prioritized the first phase of Shannon Park in Dartmouth for new factory-built housing—helping more families and individuals find a safe place to call home, sooner.
Shannon Park is a Canada Lands Company redevelopment, and it represents a generational opportunity for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour. Originally slated for a minimum of 20% affordable housing, the first two parcels have already been purchased with a commitment of 600 affordable units. That commitment ensures the original target will be met—and it opens the door for us to go further and deliver even more.
Listening to our community and to our advocacy, Canada Lands has been working closely with their Affordable Housing Advisory Committee to push beyond the original target. And now, with Build Canada Homes stepping in, we can accelerate timelines, scale up construction, and get more affordable homes built at Shannon Park, faster.
Our Government is acting with urgency and moving with expediency, and while final details for this phase are still being finalized, I’m thrilled to share that remediation of the land is expected to begin this fall. That means we are on track to get shovels in the ground as soon as possible.
And believe me—I’ll be pushing hard every step of the way. Shannon Park is a generational opportunity to build a complete, thriving new community in Dartmouth, and there’s no time to waste.
