Last Thursday’s shooting being investigated as a homicide

The RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division is seeking information in relation to a homicide in North Preston.

On March 14, at approximately 4:23 p.m., RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment, with assistance from Halifax Regional Police, responded to a report of a shooting on Downey Rd. Police responded immediately and located a man with a gunshot wound.

On March 18, the victim, 18-year-old Dieago Downey, succumbed to his injuries in hospital; the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service has ruled his death a homicide.

“We’re appealing to people who witnessed the shooting or have information about the incident to come forward,” says Sgt. Withrow. “We’re talking about the life of a young man lost to a senseless act of violence. If you know what happened, or have video of the area around the time of the shooting, please contact investigators; your willingness to speak up could make a difference in identifying those responsible for Mr. Downey’s death.”

Investigators are also looking to speak with anyone who may have knowledge of Downey’s movements prior to the 4:23 p.m. 911 call.

The Special Investigations Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division is continuing to investigate and is asking anyone with information to contact police at 902-490-5020.
