Nova Scotia RCMP would like to remind shoppers to watch out for scams while searching for shopping deals this Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Two of the most common scams are known as ‘phishing’ and ‘smishing’. Here’s what to look out for:
‘Phishing’ is when you get an email from a company that you may be familiar with, and they ask you to provide information that gives them access to your account.
‘Smishing’ is very similar, but you receive an SMS text instead of an email. Remember, reputable companies will never ask you to verify your information online.
What can you do? Take a second look, call the organization to verify if something doesn’t seem right, and listen to your gut. It’s probably right. If it’s appears too good to be true, it probably is.
For more information, check out www.getcybersafe.gc.ca, or call your local RCMP Detachment at 1-800-803-RCMP (7267).
