Sidewalk, Parking and Street Network changes adjacent to proposed St. Joseph’s Square development

Thursday, May 28, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of changes within the right-of-way that will come into effect on Tuesday, June 2, on sidewalks and streets adjacent to the proposed St. Joseph’s Square development project. The project site is bordered by Kaye Street, Gottingen Street, Russell Street and the St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay School.

A sidewalk encroachment permit has been issued to enable on-site excavation work, which will result in the following changes within the right-of-way to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists travelling around the site:

Kaye Street adjacent to civic 5450:

-The sidewalk on the south side of Kaye Street will be closed between St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay School and Gottingen Street. Traffic signage will be installed to direct pedestrians to the north side sidewalk.

-The Gottingen Street crosswalk located on the south side of Kaye Street will be relocated to the north side of the intersection.

-There will also be a reduction in on-street parking on the north side of Kaye Street.

Russell Street between Vincent and Gottingen:

-Current two-way traffic will be converted to one-way on Russell Street between Vincent and Gottingen, traveling west towards Gottingen Street.

-There will be a reduction in on-street parking on the south side of Russell Street, approaching the corner of Gottingen to accommodate large vehicles entering and exiting the site.

-A protected walk way for pedestrians will be installed on the north side of Russell Street adjacent to the St. Joseph’s Square property.

The sidewalk encroachment permit is valid for six months, during which time municipal staff will monitor and assess the impact of these changes on pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

It should be noted that the project site is adjacent to an existing play area and park at the St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay School. Safety fencing will be installed around the entire construction site at all times to maintain a safe play area for the school and the community.

The municipality regrets any inconvenience that may be caused as a result of these changes. We are working closely with the site developer to ensure that residents, pedestrians and users of adjacent spaces are safe, and that mobility around the site is maintained during the construction process.
