Release:
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the arrest of a person that resulted in a broken nose.
On Sunday, December 3, 2023, Halifax Regional Police (HRP) received a complaint of a break and enter in progress. Preliminary information suggests the following:
- Upon arrival on scene, police encountered two vehicles which were later determined to be stolen.
- One vehicle pulled over, and the second vehicle attempted to hit responding police vehicles before leading the police on a dangerous high-speed chase.
- After striking one of the responding police vehicles, the stolen vehicle ultimately came to a stop, and when police approached an encounter ensued that resulted in the male passenger suffering a broken nose.
- The male was taken to hospital, released, and charged with multiple offences.
As a result of the serious injury, in accordance with the Police Act, HRP contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and domestic violence or other matters of significant public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
