SiRT investigating incident involving naked man

SiRT release:

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving a serious injury sustained by an adult male during an arrest in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On the early morning of December 3, 2024, members of the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) responded to call relating to a man in the Dartmouth area walking outside without any clothes on.
  • The male was located, did not comply with the officer’s requests, and began spitting on them.
  • The officers arrested the male, which resulted in him being taken to the ground. The male was assessed by EHS.  He was later taken to the hospital.
  • On January 7, 2025, HRP learned that the male may have sustained injuries to his face during the arrest, including a broken nose, injuries to his teeth, and required stitches.

Due to the serious injuries sustained by the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
