SiRT Investigating Matter Relating to Self-harm in HRP Cells

Late on December 13, 2023, the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) received a report related to a possible home invasion. Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • The male was arrested and taken to the HRP Prisoner Care Facility.
  • HRP discovered that the male had harmed himself and medical attention was provided.
  • Emergency Health Services attended and transported the male to hospital.
  • The male remains in hospital.

In accordance with the Police Act, HRP contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
