SiRT release:
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving a serious injury sustained by an adult male during an arrest in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
- The afternoon of January 5, 2025, members of the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) were attempting to arrest a male who was alleged to have entered a home unlawfully in Halifax. He was arrested for multiple breaches of Court Orders and Break and Enter.
- A struggle took place during arrest which resulted in the male sustaining a broken arm.
- The male was transported to the HRP Prisoner Care Facility where he was assessed by EHS. He was then transported to hospital.
Due to the serious injury sustained by the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.
SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
