The Province’s independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a report of a domestic assault alleged to have been committed by a member of the RCMP.
On the evening of February 3, 2017 members of the RCMP reported a conversation that had occurred earlier in the week between themselves and a female civilian employee. During the course of that earlier conversation information was disclosed leading the officers to believe a domestic assault had recently occurred.
As a result of the disclosure, and in accordance with the Police Act, SiRT was contacted shortly after the incident came to light by the RCMP and has started an investigation into the incident.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
