For a few years, my girls have wanted to put up a lemonade stand and sell lemonade at our campground. I was reluctant to let them because I didn’t like the thought of them just keeping the money. So when I was approached by the Yummy Mummy Club to do a blog post about Plan International’s Because I am a Girl initiative I knew I could accomplish several goals at once.

So my girls and I made some posters and LOTS of lemonade and hosted our own Pink LemonAid stand to raise funds for the Because I’m a Girl initiative. The girls even provided water for any dogs that came to the stand with their owners. A hot day and lots of thirsty campers made for brisk business and we sold out quickly.lemonaidstandcollage

Pink LemonAid is one of Because I am a Girl’s signature fundraising initiatives. It is an easy and fun way for Canadians to host a lemonade stand, raise awareness about Because I am a Girl and girls’ rights, and to raise funds to support Because I am a Girl programs in developing countries.

As the mother of two young girls, I really like their motto that investing in girls can change the world. It is so important to share the fortunes we have been given here in Canada with others who may not even have the basic necessities of life. We are lucky to live in this country and it is our responsibility to pass our knowledge and gifts onto others. My girls are still young but we are constantly telling them that they have everything they need and that not every child does. We get them involved in preparing outgrown clothing for donation and talk about why giving a second life to our things is a good thing. Our Pink LemonAid stand was also another teaching opportunity and the girls were happy to do their part.

I’d love to say the lemonade stand was all fun and games but lemonade is sticky! I don’t think the floor of my trailer will ever be the same. Although our dog, Bella, enjoyed the mess! But we were able to raise $20 for the Pink LemonAid initiative so it was worth all the mess in the end.

If your kids have been bugging you to have a lemonade stand, why not let them… Here’s a link to help you host your own Pink LemonAid stand. You might actually have some fun (if you don’t mind the mess)!

Because I am a Girl is Plan’s global initiative to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls – and everyone around them – out of poverty. Through this initiative, Plan creates sustainable projects in developing countries to improve girls’ access to clean water, food, healthcare, education, and protection from violence and exploitation.
