Small Change Means Big Change: A Dollar a Day Helps a Veteran in Crisis VETS Canada Launches National Fundraising Campaign

Veterans Emergency Transition Services Canada (VETS Canada) is pleased
to announce the launch of their new national fundraising campaign: Small Change Means Big  Change: a Dollar a Day Helps a Veteran in Crisis.

Canadians are being asked to consider
donating a dollar a day to provide hope; a hand up; and a new beginning for a continuously-increasing number of homeless and/or in-crisis Canadian Armed Forces / RCMP Veterans.

VETS Canada, a national charity and service provider of Veterans Affairs Canada, is the largest  24/7 Canadian organization dedicated to addressing the emergency needs of homeless and in-
crisis Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP. It’s hundreds of dedicated volunteers (primarily Veterans or still-serving military members) have relied on a unique model of peer
support to provide life-saving aid in response to thousands of requests for assistance since  2010.

“We are seeing a significant surge in the number of Veterans reaching out or being referred to us for emergency aid; which is indicative of just how quickly this issue is growing,” notes Jim
Lowther, VETS Canada Co-Founder, CEO and President. “Although we are doing everything possible to help all of these Veterans, we are having to stretch each and every dollar in attempts to meet this emerging need. We firmly believe that when Canadians realize the extent of the issue of Veteran homelessness (and related crises) in our very own country, they will want to help – we can all play a part in ending Veteran homelessness for our nation’s heroes.”

From 2016 to 2017 alone, VETS Canada observed a 143% increase in requests for assistance from Veterans in crisis and/or homeless.

“A dollar a day means so little to many Canadians; less than a daily cup of coffee, a weekly lottery ticket, or dinner out once a month,” says Debbie Lowther, VETS Canada Co-Founder and Chair.

“To a Veteran in crisis, this generosity can literally prevent homelessness, provide access to housing and food, and keep families together; lifelines that can prevent suicide. What seems like so little to some can mean the difference between life and death for others. If you are a Canadian who values your safety and freedom, please help us end this national crisis.”
