Here’s my thoughts on the latest in sports and entertainment.

  • This week’s Mad Men episode seen the return of Dick Whitman. I can’t help but notice the extreme contrast between Dick Whitman and Don Draper. This sounds a little funny since they’re the same person, but think about it. Whitman is much calmer, smiles more and overall seems like a much more caring person, whereas Draper tends to be grumpy and very self centered. The major similarity between the two is of course a raging sex drive. Just as I was thinking about how different Draper is when he’s in the role of Whitman, there he was putting the moves on Anna’s niece Stephanie. After Draper leaves LA, unable to confront Anna about the cancer she doesn’t know she has,  he returns to his natural self in New York by treating the usual stiff Lane to a night of drinking, food and best of all, prostitution. The episode also went deeper into the relationtionship between Joan and her husband Greg, which reminded me of the time last season when he flat out raped her on the floor of Don’s office. Were the writers actually going somewhere with this, or are they leaving it up to the viewer to reach a conclusion about their situation?
  • UFC 117 has come and gone, and will go down as one of the year’s top cards. Chael Sonnen did everything to back up his smack talk except win. I wasn’t surprised that Sonnen was able to take

Chael Sonnen played the role of Anderson Silva's daddy for 23 minutes, only to be submitted in the final minutes of a five round war.

Silva down, but was shocked by his stand up. He actually rocked Silva a few times, but it didn’t matter, as Silva’s BJJ skills were the perfect prescription for Sonnen’s 23 minutes of dominance. Once little slip by Sonnen was all it took and it was game over. The most disappointing part of the evening besides Sonnen absolutely blowing his chance at a title was the performance of Thiago Alves. He looked slow and lacked the explosive striking that has made him one of the MMA’s top welterweights. The poor performance obviously stems from a 13 month layoff, plus his inability to once again make weight. Big ups also go to Junior Dos Santos who used Roy Nelson as a punching bag for three rounds. Dos Santos is now next in line to fight the winner of Brock Lesnar and Cain Velesquez. JDS better start working on his take down defense.

  • This week’s episode of Entourage made me wonder how many characters can they fit into an episode. This weeks show featured the usually five (Vince, Drama, Ari, Eric, Turtle), Scott, Ari’s wife, Lloyd, Vince’s GF Sasha, Turtle’s GF/business partner, Billy Walsh, Amanda Daniels (Vince’s former agent), Barbara Miller, Dana Gordon and Lizzie. Am I missing anyone? That’s 15 people appearing with speaking lines in a 29 minute show. The show really did a good job at getting everyone in there and making their role relevant. This week’s episode featured the long awaited return of Billy Walsh, and he’s a new man. I don’t think I can take anymore of the old Billy, so let’s hope he sticks to his new believes. They foreshadowed a bit that he’d be working with Drama, which will be fun to watch. Ari Gold provided another classic line when he said “I don’t care if someone wants to sell the rights to Justin Beiber’s virginity, I don’t want to talk to anyone.” , or something along those lines. Great line, but his rivalry with Lizzy is annoying, and I hope they reach a resolution soon. The show is now taking another direction with Vince, but I expect that to end soon. He entered the series as Hollywood’s golden boy, turned into a bit of a diva with the whole Aquaman fiasco, had a major flop and seen his career nosedive thanks to Medellin, had his comeback, now he’s living a reckless lifestyle by boozing all day and dating a porn star. I suppose there’s only so much you can do with his character, and I can’t complain about seeing a completely naked Sasha Grey in the last scene of this week’s episode. Holla!
  • So A-Rod hits his 600th home run and the media pretty much shits all over him. Forget about what type of person he is, it’s still a major accomplishment. People will hate on the milestone due to his admitted steroid use, but not everyone who takes steroids is this good; the majority of steroid users aren’t even close. Compared to Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, the milestone doesn’t stack up. But for a modern day player, who most definitely played against other steroid users, it’s a big deal and should be acknowledged as such.
  • The new Madden game came out this week. I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but I plan on playing the shit out of it all weekend, and I’ll have a review next week.

That’s it for now. Stay away from that purple drank!
