Mmmm… Beerfest…

Seaport09285

This past weekend I spent Saturday evening at the 4th Annual Halifax Seaport Beerfest with some of my good friends. 175 different beers, great food, great music and great company, it was a lot of fun and I couldn’t have asked for much more! It’s also where I discovered one of my new favorite beers, Innis & Gunn. It’s an oak-aged beer and it’s like no other I’ve had before and I highly recommend that everyone tries it.

As much as I love beer, I feel like it’s hindering my training right now. I’ve been hitting the gym very hard lately but I’ve also been drinking a lot of beer which for me also leads to some pizza and probably more beer and less cardio and less gym time. My friend Krissy, who writes for the site sometimes, gave me this quote earlier this week, “You can’t have your six pack and drink it too!” which made me start thinking a little bit…

I am definitely one of those people who wants to have abs, there’s no doubt that a lot of us do, but I don’t need a completely ripped six pack. What I do like having is some definition in my stomach and having something to show for all of the hard work I do in the gym. Most of the summer I had just that, but recently I seemed to have lost it and I think it’s due to my weekend diet. I’m a firm believer that you don’t need to be perfect in the gym or with what you eat ALL the time (the main reason I started this site is to let people know that) because a lot of people that try to be 100% perfect all the time will fail and then they give up completely. I think that I deserve to have a cheat meal here and there (once or twice a week) as a reward, but I’ve been “rewarding myself” more like three or five times a week and now it’s showing and it’s time to do something about it!

It’s going to be tough over the next few weeks because there’s going to be going away parties and people wanting to “do drinks” before I leave, but I’m going to try my best to get my ass in gear and get that vague shape of a six pack I had back.

As I write this I just had another epiphany as to why I’ve put on a bit of “fluff” around the mid-section; I stopped running. No cardio and cutting back on the sports being played obviously has something to do with it as well. That’s it, I’m going for a run…
