Getting Through Adversity

Adversity: a state of misfortune or affliction; “debt-ridden farmers struggling with adversity”; “a life of hardship”

It’s a simple fact, everyone faces some kind of adversity at some point in their life. It can be something as small as getting a flat tire to something as large as losing your job.  What you do with it when you’re faced with it, is up to you…

Over the past month and a bit I’ve faced a lot of adversity and negativity in my life.  First off I was threatened with a lawsuit for copyright infringement in which I couldn’t prove I didn’t do (for the record, I didn’t) but I had to deal with.  I was working for a company I didn’t like or respect.   I was financially strapped.   I was diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatters Disease, which makes no sense because I’m not a teenage boy or having a growth spurt.  And most recently, I broke up with my long-term girlfriend.  That’s a lot of crap do deal with in a 5 week span.

In a previous life, what I would have done was dove face-first into a case of beer (or two) and a large pizza (or two) for a week (and yes, or two).  But instead, I’m using all of this to better myself and my life and move on from it.  Instead of letting all of this get the best of me, I’m going take it all and use it as motivation and run.

It all started off with a new job.  I started at a great Sports company doing graphic and web design three weeks ago and I’m extremely happy there already.  I paid the stock photo company that wanted to sue me for the royalties of the image that I was being accused of stealing. What’s a few grand, right?  I’ve started doing proper stretches for my injury. I was really bad for not stretching before and after my sports and workouts and have become more educated in this area and can pass this along to the kids I coach hockey to. Unfortunately there is no happy ending to the last part of my story, but “‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” –  Alfred Lord Tennyson .

Besides trying to turn all of this around, over the past few weeks I’ve had a lot of time to think and reassess my life and think about what I want to be when I grow up.

As I mentioned previously, I really enjoy the company I work for right now, so I have a feeling that I’ll be there for a while.  But on top of that, I’ve decided to go for my NSFA (The Nova Scotia Fitness Association) “Fitness Theory Certification” and see if personal training is something I’d like to get in to.  It’s something I’ve had a majour passion for in the past few years and I think it’s something that I’m going to really enjoy and be really good at.  It’ll be a long, hard road, but I’m looking forward to it and I plan on sharing the experience with all of you.

I hope letting you in on my personal life lets you get to know me a bit better, but I hope it also helps you realize that when you’re faced with something negative or hard times in life, don’t let them get you down.  Take what’s thrown at you and throw something right back.
