The Murphy’s Fish and Chips Junior Eagles have secured a berth is the championship game by virtue of a 9-1 spanking of the Napanee Express in front of 2,000 spectators in St. Croix. Napanee scored their only run on a first ining homerun from Lucas McNeill. The Nova Scotians threatened in the second inning as Cory Avery walked and was singled to second by Tyler Whynot. Both runners moved up a base courtesy of a wild pitch from Napanee pitcher, Joran Graham. Graham, who was selected top pitcher and MVP of the qualifying round was able to bear down and strand the runners by fanning Patrick Avery and Trent MacDonald before getting Trevor Boutilier to fly out to end the inning.
Junior Eagles’ starter, Tyson Barkman settled down nicely in the bottom of the second inning and didn’t allow a ball out of the infield. However, things did not go so smoothly for Graham to start the third inning. Barkman led off the inning for the locals when an illegal pitch was called on Graham. This led to a heated exchange between the Napanee coach and the 2nd base umpire who eventually tossed the coach. The next pitch hit Barkman directly in his right arm bringing the Eagles off the bench who instantly turned the intensity up a few notches. After a second illegal pitch was called, Donnelly Archibald blasted a long homerun to score Barkman. After a Zach Sill fly ball, Blake Hunter ripped a double and Cory Avery walked. Tyler Whynot stepped into one and ripped a three-run homer making it a 5-1 game. They added another pair of runs as Trent MacDonald singled and scored when Boutilier laced a shot to centrefield which was booted by the outfielder. The hustling MacDonald scored all the way from first base and Boutilier took second base on the error. Boutilier advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch from a clearly flustered Graham.
The Junior Eagles were hungry for more in the fourth inning as Sill led off with a walk and was singled to second base by Blake Hunter. Graham fanned Cory Avery and Whynot and just when it appeared that he would escape any damage, Patrick Avery drilled a single which knocked in both runners and made the score 9-1. With the victory, the Junior Eagles will play for the Gold Medal today at 2:00pm against the winner of Napanee and Owen Sound.
