An Unbalanced weekend…

IMG_0170 copyOr was it balanced? I guess it really depends on how you look at it. Personally, I’m calling it unbalanced because there were two majour extremes to it. On one side, I did quite a bit of exercise and worked my ass off, but on the other, I kind of ate like shit (and by kind of, I mean I really ate like shit). I’m actually feeling a bit guilty today about how I ate on the weekend and I hate letting food put a guilt trip on me.

Friday night after work I had a double header in softball. A lot of people give me grief saying that “softball isn’t a workout or exercise” and my response to them is “than you’re not playing hard enough!” Yes, its slow-pitch softball, but I run my ass off when I’m at bat and on the bases. I get my heart rate up and I get short of breath. I’m also “that guy” who slides into the bases and dives for the ball if it’s near him. Maybe that’s just because my cardio is crappy, but I like to think that it’s because I’m trying hard!

After ball we decided to order some pizza and garlic fingers. We had a bit of a stressful situation arise on the field which involved one of my best friends having a seizure, so I didn’t really want to cook anything when I got home, so we ordered in. I was also looking after my friend and keeping her company after her seizure, so I just wanted to eat something simple and comforting, which to me is pizza.

Saturday morning we got up and I made us all breakfast (us being me, my friend and Gina). I made us fruit smoothies in my magic bullet and my classic Mexican Omelette. SOOOO good! After dropping off my friend at home, I decided I wanted to go golfing. I have a company golf tourney in a few weeks and seeing as I work for a sports company, there are a lot of great golfers that work with me. When I was a teenager I golfed about 80 rounds a year and was about a 11 handicap but unfortunately over the last 10 years, I’d say I’ve gotten out MAYBE twice a year each year and my game isn’t really much of a game anymore and golf seems to be my handicap. I use to really enjoy golf (only because I wasn’t that bad at it) but now it’s more like a long walk, ruined by a little white ball for 5 hours. It’s also where I usually invent new curse words. After realizing this I also realized that I don’t want to look completely foolish in front of my co-workers and be the weakest link on my team (which they tell me I will be), so I figured because Gina had to study for a mid-term all day, I’d head to the golf course alone and try to join a group and work on my swing. I figured it’s easier to look foolish in front of strangers a few times rather than the people you have to see at work every day. It ended up raining on us around the 3rd hole and by the 6th it was pouring rain, so I only ended up doing 9 holes, but I had a lot of fun! And no, I’m not telling you my score!!

The golf was fun and everything (even though I was terrible!!) but I didn’t feel like I got any kind of workout in, so Gina and I decided to head to the gym and do a workout. After talking about it for a few minutes we decided to try a kettlebell benchmark workout we had heard about from Julie at Julie Mac Fitness, called “Chrissy”. If you haven’t heard of the Chrissy workout, it’s a timed workout where you start with 30 burpees followed by 20 double handed kettlebell swings and you keep repeating the two, going down by 5 reps with the burpees each time and up by 5 kettlebell swings each time until you’re down to 5 burpees and 45 kettlebell swings. If you’re sitting there thinking “that’s not that bad” check out this video and then try it, it IS that bad!!

I did my workout with a 45lbs kettlebell and did the “correct” burpees where you do a pushup and then the jump tuck and Gina did hers with a 30lbs kettlebell but didn’t do the pushup but did a straight jump. I registered a time of 14:50 and Gina did 14:29! I was happy with my time but know I can do better! On the other hand, I was very surprised and I’m extremely proud of Gina and her time. She killed it! After we caught our breath we did a Plank Tabata and then our Pushups for the day on our 100 Pushup challenge.

After some supper and a shower, we headed over to a friend’s place for a few glasses of wine and to play some Wii. We played “Just Dance“. Have you heard of it? I hadn’t either! And when I saw it, I didn’t really care to, but I’ll tell you what, after 2 or 3 glasses of wine, it was some of the most fun I’ve had in a while! We worked up a great sweat and had a blast making fun of eachother dance like fools at which point a few glasses of wine turned in to a few bottles of wine and a great night with friends. When we got home we played some Mario Kart and had some more pizza and a few more drinks and then headed to bed. Good times!

We woke up Sunday morning and finished off Friday’s pizza with one last slice of each and a few garlic fingers to start the day. After getting up and on the go we then decided to try a local café I had been hearing a lot about called “Two If By Sea“. This place is very well known in this area for its decadent croissants and since we had never been there before we decided to try two, not knowing that one is MORE than enough for two people to eat. We had the Almond Croissant and the Chocolate Croissant and if you want to take a guess at how many calories each one has in it, take a look at the picture and try to count them because I’m sure you can see them! (I’m guessing at least 2,000 cals each). Their website has this written on the home page; “Two If By Sea Café embraces indulgence.” which I now know and completely understand after eating there. The rest of the day I did a bit of work, chilled out and watched some Dexter. Around 8:30 we decided to head to the Chickenburger which is a 1940s diner for some old fashioned cheeseburgers (a double for me) and onion rings.

Once again, I know I’ve written a freakin’ short novel here, but I wanted to show you why I’m still trying to figure out whether this past weekend was balanced or unbalanced…

Yes we did a wicked workout or two but we also had a slice of pizza (or 6) and not to mention the cheeseburgers and onion rings. I believe in a healthy balance, but I don’t think eating pizza all weekend and working out to try and balance it out is not the way to go.

I see a lot of people at the gym (and a lot of my friends) almost every day busting their asses to get in shape, only to see them an hour later in the food court scarfing down pizza or DQ or McDicks. Then they ask me or themselves this question: “Why aren’t I losing any weight?” My answer for you if you ask me this; “You’re not losing weight because you don’t have a healthy balance.” A healthy balance isn’t working out and eating like shit. In my opinion a healthy balance would be to eat well during the week and hit the gym or run in the park or play a sport or whatever you do to be active, and then enjoy your weekends with a slice of ‘za and a few beers. And when I say a slice of pizza I mean a slice or two, not an entire pizza. Don’t let all your hard work go to waste over the weekend, it’s not worth it!
