Blog: Me & Yoga

I had done yoga a few times before in the past and had really enjoyed it!  It was a kind of workout and burn like I had never had before and it was GREAT!  Unfortunately, due to my motorcycle accident last July (July 29th, 2008), I haven’t been able to do yoga since as I injured my wrists and hips quite badly and they’re still causing me pain to this day.

The reason I decided to go to yoga tonight was because it was brought to my attention by a few people that yoga is great for stretching and focusing on specific body parts and that a lot of my injuries that I sustained (hips, hamstrings, quads, it band, lower back… the list goes on and on) were actually able to be focused directly on using yoga.

I had really wanted to give yoga another chance for quite some time but I had a fear of hurting myself trying to do poses that involved using my wrists because I ‘m not even able to hold myself up in a push-up position without a stabbing pain.  BUT, I thought I’d suck it up and give it a try anyway and see what happened.

So, tonight I went to a free “Yoga for Men” class at Lu Lu Lemon here in Halifax.

As soon as I got there, I talked to my instructor Guylaine and mentioned all of my ailments right off the bat.  She said do what I could and she’d help me with whatever I wasn’t able to do.  The best part about talking to Guylaine before the class is that after mentioning that I had injuries, she decided to have us work on yoga poses that worked on stretching them all.

An hour flew by faster than I thought it would and I really enjoyed the class a lot.  Guylaine was a very good teacher and had a good sense of humour.  I won’t lie, I did have a lot of difficulty with anything that involved putting preasure on my wrists, but I either didn’t do those exercises or I was able to do them my forearms instead.  Besides that, I did get a great stretch in and yes, it did hurt like hell because it’s all so tight, but I feel like I needed that kind of stretch and workout tonight.

I honestly think yoga can and will help me with a lot of my pains and tightness in my body and I want to give it another chance as I did enjoy it… I’ll have an update for you a week from tonight… Or maybe tomorrow bitching and complaining about how sore I am and how I can’t walk right.
