Fun, Sun, BBQ and Beer

bbqMy weekend didn’t turn out quite as I planned it to!

We had plans to hit the golf course Saturday morning and then do the “Chrissy Workout” Saturday afternoon, but when we woke up in the morning, Gina was sick. It was a beautiful morning and I ended up having to cancel our tee time and I was pretty disappointed, but there wasn’t much I could do. I felt bad that Gina was sick, but I also wanted to be outside on a day where it was 26 degrees by 11 am.

What could I do out in the sun?

While watching some World Cup Soccer, I decided I wanted to play tennis (makes sense right?). Now when I say “play tennis”, what that means is go out and swing my tennis racket at that fuzzy yellow ball and try to get it over that damned net with the least amount of curse words possible.

I’ve only played tennis about 15 times in my life and I have never gotten any instruction on what to do or how to play, so what I call tennis, others may not. Tennis is a really fun sport, but I also think it’s the most frustrating sport I’ve ever played in my life, and I golf. (If you can call what I do “golfing”). I’m still learning and I’m thinking about taking a lesson or two.

I played tennis with my friend Rebecca and we got a good sweat on, got some colour from the sun, and I won, which is always fun (hey, that rhymed!). I didn’t want to spend the whole morning/afternoon out of the house, (well I did, but felt bad because Gina was at home, in bed, sick) so I headed home around 1 to check on her.

After making sure Gina was ok, getting her some juice and meds, I went over to my buddy’s house to BBQ and watch the England vs. US soccer match. My goal was to not have any beer, not eat the hot dogs they were BBQing and to stay the hell away from the chips. I had great motivation, but I only managed to stay away from one of three. I had two or three handfuls of chips, no big deal, but I did end up eating 4 hot dogs, ha ha. Gross, I know… But SO good! I was pretty proud of myself for not having any beer and after a lot of yelling at the TV for a couple of hours because I picked England to win and they played to a draw, and a great hang out session with my friends, I was off to another BBQ and a “boy’s night” with the guys.

I hit up the grocery store on the way to my other buddy’s place to grab some meat to throw on the grill and I had full intensions on just getting something simple like extra lean ground beef to grill up a few burgers, but as I was in the meat section, I saw something amazing… A Top Striploin Steak that was about 7” wide and about 3”-4” thick. It was a thing of beauty. When I showed it to the boys, one of them said “are you sure that’s not a roast?”

My plan for the night was once again to not have any chips and/or beer; That lasted about 2 hours. I’m still not sure how it happened but all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I looked down at my hands to find a beer and a hand full of chips. I don’t know where they came from, but I took it as a sign from GOD and I decided not to fight it.

At about 2:15am I tweeted this:
“BBQ + Beer + Poker + Cigars + Rum + Halo 3 = Boys night”

Sunday was a day of softball and relaxing.

What I’m taking from this weekend is that summer is here which means BBQing and beer and that I’m done trying to plan out my entire weekends on a Thursday. Plans never go as you plan them, so why bother?

Also, so far I’ve gotten away with having drinks on Saturday without a migraine (knock on wood) but it’s usually the Tuesday after a weekend of drinking that I get them, so we’ll see what the rest of the week brings.
