Spring road maintenance well underway

Tuesday, April 21, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Municipal crews are fully mobilized to address potholes and significant wear-and-tear on streets across the Halifax region.

With the hot asphalt plant now operational for the season, and the arrival of warmer temperatures, repair efforts have been ramped up. Initially, capacity will be doubled to target 300 potholes a day for the next few weeks.

The first priority is to address potholes on main arterial routes, in addition to monitoring residential side streets across the region to identify and address problematic areas. In the coming weeks, work will also commence to patch sections on main arterials and collectors where winter season damage has resulted in significant cracking or buckling.

Patching and repair of potholes is a year-round effort to ensure municipal streets are safe for all users. Potholes are identified during regular staff road patrols, as well as reports from residents. To report a pothole, residents can submit an online service request at https://apps.halifax.ca/311. This information is regularly added to the rolling list of priorities for pothole repairs.

Street Pavement Markings

The municipality will also re-commence its annual pavement marking program in early May, weather permitting. Work to repaint pavement markings will begin in the downtown core and continue in other areas of the region into the fall. The majority of painting on busy streets is performed during the overnight hours to minimize traffic disruption.
