(Updated) Spring Road Weight Restrictions to Begin

** Update :

To minimize potential damage to municipal streets and roads, the Halifax Regional Municipality will introduce its annual spring weight restrictions, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, March 11.

These restrictions are for heavy vehicles travelling on municipally maintained roads throughout the region. Regular weight tolerances apply on the exempt roads.

The weight restrictions are expected to remain in place into the spring. However, the restrictions may be lifted earlier if the roads become stabilized. The municipality will issue a follow-up PSA should this occur.

The municipality’s spring weight restrictions are consistent with those of the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (NSTIR). Details of vehicle restrictions can be found online athttp://novascotia.ca/tran/trucking/springweight.asp.

Original

Spring weight restrictions on all provincial roads will begin on March 11, starting at 12:01 a.m.

Restrictions begin at that time for Halifax Regional Municipality and the following counties, Annapolis, Colchester, Cumberland, Digby, Hants, Kings, Lunenburg, Pictou, Queens, Shelburne and Yarmouth.

Restrictions for Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, Richmond and Victoria counties will start a week later at 12:01 a.m., Monday, March 18.

Weight restrictions on heavy vehicles are necessary during the spring thaw to protect roads that are weakened by mild and wet weather. They are expected to be in place for about two months.

The department will continue to monitor road and weather conditions to determine when it is safe to remove the restrictions.

Some roads, including 100-series highways, are exempt from the restrictions.
