Staff Pick – Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: a Modern Beastiary by David Sedaris

Today’s reading suggestion comes to us from Patricia Milner, a guest blogger from the Annapolis Valley Regional Library.

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: a modern bestiary
by David Sedaris (also available as an audio download)

Observational essays with astounding illustrations set this book apart. You know going in that it is Sedaris so it’s going to be different, but wow, he really gets your attention this time.

Narrated by animals, these stories are clever, subtle and sometimes outrageous. The wry classic Sedaris humour is still there for the most part and he had me squirming in my seat recognizing some of our worst traits. I came away with “that was a little disturbing but I’m glad I read it ” feeling. For such a small book there is an awful lot to reflect on here. I think it would be a great choice for a book club. It will have friends and foes but it shouldn’t leave anyone feeling neutral.
