Statement from Minister Casey

NOTE: The following is a statement from Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey.

The outcome of this evening’s vote is a disappointment for parents and students, and for government. This vote comes after reaching two tentative agreements — both recommended by the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union to its membership.

Government is listening. We capped classes, hired more teachers, and invested to increase supports for students struggling with math and reading. We have shown we are willing to make the necessary investments.

I want to assure parents and guardians that their child’s education is a priority for government.

The teachers’ union admitted a strike will cause short-term pain for students — that’s not the best way to address challenges in our classrooms. The best way to do that is by working with us to avoid disruptions for today’s students.
