Stephen Hart started playing soccer professionally in 1979, but the former midfielder is more known for his managerial career. His coaching journey began in 1988, and his last managerial job was with HFX Wanderers FC in 2022. Hart, a long-time Halifax resident, had a memorable soccer career around the globe.
Canada’s Three Teams in MLS
The Canadian Premier League is the biggest soccer league in Canada, but three Canadian teams are playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) right now. Toronto became the first in 2007, followed by Montreal, and Vancouver. Although Hart never played in America, MLS is one of the top soccer leagues. MLS betting has become extremely popular to bet on in recent times, with championship, playoff, and top scorer odds readily available. Although MLS is the major North American soccer league, the Canadian Premier League houses several top teams, players, and coaches. Hart knows Canadian soccer extremely well, having spent many years of his professional life on Canadian soil.
In the Canada Fold From 1997 to 2012
King of Donair offered Hart his first role in coaching, first as player-coach from 1988 to 1989. He moved back to the Nova Scotia team in 1993 and went on to manage the side for eight years. The San Fernando man then moved into Canada national team management with the U23s in 1997.
Hart shifted through the ranks within the national team before becoming assistant boss to the senior side in 2005. After several years of being the assistant and interim manager, the Trinidad and Tobago-born boss officially took charge of the Canada men’s national team permanently for three years from 2009 to 2012.
After finally leaving his role with Canada, Hart was back in management a year later with Trinidad and Tobago. Shortly after, he took over at HFX Wanderers FC, which lasted from 2018 to 2022.
After an incredible but hectic career within the Canadian national team ranks, Hart has been in no rush to get back into soccer management following the Halifax departure. He did a lot for the Maple Leafs during his time in Canada, and he would have been proud to see the nation qualify and participate in the recent 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Reds will kick off their tournament with a game in Toronto on Friday, June 12. They then head to Vancouver for their final two group games. John Herdman did a great job with the national team during his reign, but can the Maple Leafs kick on after the Englishman’s departure? The 2026 World Cup will no doubt be a fascinating tournament on North American turf.
