Storm Bill-ding

Hurricane Bill could send epic waves to Nova Scotia's shores. The question is when. ScotiaSurfer.com spoke with Peter Bowyer at the Canadian Hurricane Centre on Tuesday.

It’s still too early to tell.

That’s the response ScotiaSurfer.com got from Peter Bowyer, program supervisor at the Canadian Hurricane Centre, when asked about whether Hurricane Bill will hit Nova Scotia directly.

The storm, listed as a Category 2 hurricane, was still more than 2,000 kilometres southeast of Bermuda as of noon on Tuesday. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 167 km/h is moving WNW at just under 26 km/h.

Whether or not Bill hits Nova Scotia directly, the storm could bring some epic waves to the province’s shores. The question is when.

Based on long-range surf forecasts at the popular website MagicSeaweed.com, some of those epic waves could start to hit Nova Scotia on Saturday morning, peak on Sunday evening, and continue through Monday afternoon.

Yet, based on models at the National Hurricane Center, Bill is not projected to pass Bermuda until about 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, and it’s not likely the waves will be a lot farther ahead of the storm.

Bowyer believes the big stuff might come a little later in the weekend, possibly starting on Sunday morning and continuing through Monday.

That said, as is always the case, hurricanes are notoriously fickle, so once again we return to that frustrating refrain, it’s still too early to tell.
