The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that weekly green cart collection will begin Monday, June 29, and continue until Friday, Oct. 2, in all communities across the municipality.
As part of the 2026/27 municipal budget, Regional Council approved the return of enhanced weekly green cart collection. This initiative supports enhanced organics collection and waste diversion efforts in alignment with the Strengthening Communities goals outlined in the 2026–2030 Strategic Plan. During the warmer summer months, weekly collection helps reduce odours, limit wildlife attraction and provide more frequent service when organic waste volumes are typically higher.
Residents are asked to place materials curbside prior to 7 a.m. on collection day to guarantee pickup, ensuring items are contained and secured from wildlife. To find your collection schedule, visit our website.
With warmer weather on the way, here are some tips to help keep your green cart clean and reduce odours:
- Wrap wet food waste in boxboard or a single sheet of newspaper
- Line your mini-bin and green cart with paper bags
- Empty your mini-bin daily
- Place your green cart at the curb each collection day, even if it’s not full
- Freeze food waste until collection day
- Store your cart in a cool, shaded and well-ventilated spot
Bi-weekly green cart collection will resume on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026.
