A Halifax Regional Police officer who is currently on suspension faces additional charges in relation to an incident which occurred over the weekend.
Constable Jeff Buchanan, whom Halifax Regional Police charged with extortion and breach of trust in December 2009 and drug possession in January 2010, was charged over the weekend in relation to a domestic disturbance in Cape Breton. Cape Breton Regional Police Service investigated the matter, through which it is alleged Buchanan assaulted a woman known to him at a Gardiner Mines address in the early morning hours of August 8.
Buchanan is scheduled to appear in Cape Breton Provincial Court today where he will face charges of assault and breach of recognizance as a result of the incident over the weekend. The investigation into this matter is on-going by Cape Breton Regional Police Service.
Buchanan remains suspended from Halifax Regional Police.
