Taking Pride In Our Crosswalks

Tuesday, July 5, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is demonstrating its commitment to diversity and inclusion by initiating a rainbow crosswalk pilot project.

Work begins overnight tonight on painting four highly visible downtown Halifax and Dartmouth crosswalks with the colours of the rainbow.

The rainbow flag is synonymous with the LGBTQ+ community and as such the municipality is showing its support by laying down the colours in some of our crosswalks, just in time for Halifax Pride 2016.

The selected crosswalks for the pilot project will be at the following prominent intersections:

  • Gottingen and Cornwallis streets
  • Spring Garden Road and Barrington Street
  • Spring Garden Road and South Park Street
  • Alderney Drive and Ochterloney Street

Painting will begin at approximately 12:30 a.m., at Barrington Street, followed by Spring Garden Road, Gottingen Street, and then Alderney Drive. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

Safety was paramount for the municipality, which is why the art is being installed at signalized intersections only and as part of a small pilot project. Paint is to government safety and environmental standards and crews are taking extra measures to reduce slippery surfaces and ensure the existing safety infrastructure is not altered.

Diverse ideas and inclusive actions create stronger communities. This fun and creative approach to sharing the municipality’s Pride as a community was a collaborative effort between the LGBTQ+ community, the Mayor’s Office and Transportation and Public Works municipal staff.

Photo Op: Mayor Mike Savage, District 8 Coun. Jennifer Watts, and a representative from Halifax Pride will be checking out the newly painted crosswalk at Gottingen and Cornwallis streets Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.
