Hundreds of teachers will become students this summer, heading back to the classroom for workshops to engage and empower students.
Enrollment is now open to teachers and educators across Nova Scotia to participate in EDUfest 2014.
It is a series of workshops developed by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
“EDUfest provides sessions on important topics for teachers to enhance their skills and help them adapt to the changing needs of our students,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey. “These workshops provide educators with a great starting point as they prepare for the new school year.”
There will be more than 50 sessions on topics including:
— teaching students to be strategic
— helping students become engaged in their learning
— information technology
— autism awareness
— creating cultural diverse classrooms
— transgender 101
— bullying and cyber-bullying
— healthy living
— science
— mathematics
Last year more than 750 educators participated.
“EDUfest definitely exceeded my expectations,” said Krista Weagle, a substitute teacher with the South Shore Regional School Board and EDUfest 2013 participant. “I learned so many things that I was not even aware existed. The teachers were very helpful.”
EDUfest week will be held at the Nova Scotia Community College’s Waterfront Campus from Aug. 11 to 15. Participants with children age 5-12 can enroll them in EDUfest Kids, a hands-on learning camp for children and child-care service.
