Every city has its tells. The little habits, the inside references, the things you’d never explain to a tourist because you assume everyone just knows. Dartmouth has more than most, and people from away never quite catch them. So here’s our list. If you nod at more than half of these, you’re one of us.
- You call it the Darkside with full pride, and you’ll correct anyone from Halifax who says it like it’s an insult.
- You know the ferry is the cheapest harbour cruise on the planet and the smartest way to dodge bridge traffic. Bonus points if you can casually mention it’s the oldest saltwater ferry service in North America.
- You’ve fed the ducks at Sullivan’s Pond, and you have genuine opinions about the little duck houses.
- “City of Lakes” isn’t a slogan to you, it’s just a fact of life. You can rhyme off five of them and you learned to swim in at least one.
- Summer mornings on Lake Banook mean paddlers out before 6 a.m., and you’ve watched a regatta whether you planned to or not.
- You know the difference between the old bridge and the new bridge, and you have a firm preference about which one to take.
- You remember when the Mic Mac Rotary was Atlantic Canada’s biggest roundabout, and you survived it.
- You’ve done your Saturday at the Alderney Landing market, and somewhere deep down you believe the Dartmouth waterfront quietly beats the Halifax one.
- You watched downtown Dartmouth go from sleepy to the spot Haligonians now cross the harbour to eat and drink in, and a small part of you is a little annoyed about it.
- Natal Day means the parade, the harbour, and fireworks you watched from the right side of the water.
- You’ve walked the trails at Shubie Park, and you may have left something at the fairy houses.
- Dartmouth Crossing is where you go when you need everything at once and a parking lot the size of a small country.
- When someone says they’re “from Halifax,” you clarify. You’re from Dartmouth. There is a difference, and it matters.
